MISC:Burkina Faso, (formerly Republic of Upper Volta, a territory of
French West Africa), became independent 5 August, 1960. The climate is
tropical; warm, dry winters; hot wet summers. Tornadoes occur at the
beginning and end of the winter season. Recent droughts and
desertification are severely affecting marginal agricultural activities,
population distribution, and the economy. 90% of the work force is
engaged in agriculture. Burkina Faso is a landlocked country. Its
name means "Country of incorruptible men".
